UK introduces new scheme for use of drift reduction technology with horizontal boom sprayers

The UK regulatory authority (CRD) have introduced a new scheme for horizontal boom sprayers using drift reduction technology (DRT) recognised as having LERAP three star low-drift status.

This scheme will lead to improved harmonisation of available risk mitigation measures between the UK and other EU Member States.

PEC determination

The drift model to determine the PEC for this scheme and instructions for its use are available in an excel spreadsheet – see here. The drift model contains the appropriate regression values to calculate the initial surface water PEC due to spray drift (PECsw) for buffer zones at 6, 12 and 18 m intervals. Single applications of plant protection products require only the application rate in grammes of active substance/ha. Multiple applications, in addition to the application rate, will require the DT50 in water (worst case from the natural sediment / water study from the agreed endpoints) and the number and interval (days) for the application.

Applications

Applicants may make applications using three star DRT for authorisation of new uses or for re-authorisation of existing uses which are currently based on standard equipment. Applications should specify that they are being made under the DRT scheme and be supported by the appropriate PEC calculations and aquatic risk assessments.

Applications which have already been submitted will be assessed assuming use of standard equipment. Where uses require a buffer zone of more than 20 m, applicants will be advised and given an opportunity to submit a new risk assessment based on the use of three star DRT, for which the appropriate additional fee will be charged. Alternatively, if the environmental fate and ecotoxicology risk assessments have not commenced, applicants may submit revised PEC calculations to support use of three star DRT aquatic buffer zones.
