EFSA consults on pesticide exposure guidance for operators, workers, residents and bystanders

Currently there is no standardised approach across the EU to pesticide exposure assessment for operators, workers, bystanders and residents.

In order to provide a harmonised approach EFSA have launched a public consultation on its draft guidance to assess the risks from exposure to pesticides.  The intention is that the guidance will help risk assessors and industry to calculate the risk to those exposed to pesticides through their work or physical proximity.  The guidance covers the four population groups (as previously listed).

The guidance has proposed a number of changes to current practice in assessing exposure to pesticides. These changes include the introduction of acute risk assessments for pesticides which are acutely toxic by means of establishing an AAOEL value (acute acceptable operator exposure level). Currently however no methodology is available in setting an AAOEL. Acute assessment exposure estimates are based on the 95th percentiles of relevant data sets, whereas for longer term risk assessments the starting point should be the 75th percentile. The use of deterministic methods and a tiered approach to exposure assessments is still deemed to be appropriate.

The working group have revised all the available data and procedures to perform the operator, worker, bystander and resident risk assessment with the outcome of the EFSA OPEX calculator.

Stakeholders and all interested parties are invited to provide feedback through the online public consultation by 20 May 2014.  JSC is intending to provide comments.
